A competition concept for the new home of the Banialuka Puppet Theatre (named after Jerzy Zitzman) in Bielsko-Biała, together with a branch of the Książnica Beskidzka library for children and young people – the so-called Green Library. The theatre, the library and a technical building form a single complex in which art and education interweave, in the spirit of the New European Bauhaus.
The buildings are tied together by a green garden raised several metres above the ground. Beneath it, at plaza level, there is a summer stage and space for events, while oval openings in the garden slab let light and greenery pass between the levels. Canopies carried on slender, irregularly spaced columns and finished in timber on their undersides evoke a birch forest.
The ground floor is transparent: glass in light metallic frames and stainless steel panels that reflect their surroundings and dissolve into them. The upper floor, set on the garden, has an entirely different character – simple volumes wrapped in perforated, corrugated steel mesh that plays with light and shadow by day and becomes a glowing envelope for the interiors at night.
