MELBOURNE N–S 2047 / ANALYSIS

The first part of the master’s thesis “Melbourne N–S 2047”, defended in 2013 at the Cracow University of Technology. The thesis as a whole proposes a new compact, mixed-use centre for Melbourne covering 17 km²; this part is the analysis of the metropolis that precedes it.

Melbourne faces demographic pressure, suburban sprawl, rising living costs and a mobility problem across the whole region. The thesis proposed another route: instead of further expansion — a compact inner-city fabric based on public, pedestrian and bicycle transport, developed on post-industrial and port land that had been treated as a barrier.

A point of reference was the work of Dr Krystian Seibert (1930–2015), who after years of practice in Poland co-authored the key planning documents of the State of Victoria: the strategic plan for Melbourne, the transformation of Docklands and the inner-city Southbank. Some of the thesis’ premises have since materialised — Fishermans Bend is today the largest urban renewal area in Australia, and Docklands has become a district in its own right.

This part consists of eighteen diagrams leading from the scale of the continent to the scale of the inner city: connections, location, urban structure, public and private transport, green space, cultural and environmental factors, building heights and structure, inventory.
